Treatment Options For Varicose Veins
by: Heidi Ball
Varicose Veins are twisted, swollen, visible veins underneath the surface of the skin. While most commonly found in the legs, varicose veins can be in other parts of the body as well.
In most cases, varicose veins are a cosmetic problem. However, there are some instances in which varicose veins require treatment. Occasionally they can cause pain, blood clots or skin problems.
There is no way to prevent varicose veins from forming. There are several steps that can be taken to reduce the severity or the risk of getting new varicose veins. Those steps include: Exercise, weight control, wearing supportive shoes, avoid standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time and finally, take a break! Elevating your legs can help with blood flow.
Once a person decides on medical treatment, there are many options. Some are more invasive than others, but all seem to yield the same result: The fading or elimination of varicose veins. It is important to note that treatments do not prevent new varicose veins from forming, and it's rare but possible for veins to reappear after treatment.
The procedure called Sclerotherapy uses a liquid chemical to close off the vein, via injection. The process needs to be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks. Following treatments, legs are wrapped elastic bandages to decrease swelling and promote healing.
In another procedure, Endovenous Ablaltion Therapy, a tiny incision is made as a small tube is placed in the vein. This is performed under local anesthesia. A device at the top of the inserted tube heats up inside the vein causing it to close off. A quick recovery is expected with this treatment and the patient wears a compression sock home. In an Ambulatory Phlebectomy, about the same process occurs, but tiny veins are removed rather than closed off.
Other options are available and generally are decided upon by the individual and their care provider. Varicose veins in most cases can be treated with lifestyle changes. When medical intervention is wanted or needed, it is generally very effective, yielding results that most all patients are happy with.
The Intermountain Vein Center http://iveincenter.com offers many options for varicose vein treatment in Utah.
